Let's try this again...

So I had a wacky idea. I made an animated gif, but because I know nothing about compression, it was over 700kb. I uploaded it to my GeoCities account, thinking if I posted it here, someone who's skilled in such things might be able to do stuff to it to get it down to under 40kb, as per LJ's icon filesize limit. When I made the post, letting the page load, then reload after an edit, my hourly bandwidth limit on GeoCiites was exceede immediately. And both PhotoBucket and TinyPic.com automatically compressed it to 20x20 upon upload. I posted a call for help in my personal journal, and [info]soopageek stepped up to the plate and offered assistance. He was able to create 4 new version for me. Two of them were compressed enough to be uploaded to PhotoBucket without problems, but still too big for LJ. The two versions small enough for LJ are two-tone, and for the most part not bad, but the text is rendered unreadable in at least a few frames. So I'm hoping that someone here might be able to do some additional tweaking and maybe find a happy medium.

This bit of silliness represents nearly 5 hours of work. If you don't understand, you need to watch this video (sound required, worksafe but very bizarre). Anyway, on with the show.

I realize it's going too fast to read it all, but I wanted to try to get it at the same pace as the original song. So, here's the lyrics for your "wtf" pleasure:

Here's a Watson, there's a Watson
And another little watson
Fuzzy Watson, funny Watson
Watson Watson Holmes

Watson Watson Hudson Watson
Mycroft Moriarty Watson
Sleepy Watson, Emma Watson
Watson Watson Holmes

Where is Irene Adler? Is she on the town?
Holmes and Watson on her trail, She will soon be found
They've been searching all night long, what are they to do?
Seems they're looking everywhere, but Without a Clue

Watson Watson LeStrade Watson
Pompey brain appendix Watson
Watson calm, alarm a Watson
Watson Watson Holmes

Who is at the door now? Mysteries abound
Upstairs there on Baker Street is where they are found
But they share the spotight now, it is plain to see
Can't do much without his Boswell, elementary
---
So here's the other, slightly different 105 KB version, as well as the two different 2-tone versions:

LOL! Great work. "Emma Watson" was one nice twist. :D

Thanks. The addition of "Emma Watson" was more happenstance than design. It was originaly supposed to be "not a Watson" based on the "not a llama" from the original, but when doing various Google Image Searches to come up with elements, her picture popped up when I searched only using the term "Watson", so I thought it would be a good match to the randomness of the llama song.

LOL. The llama song is eerily addictive, and this twist on it is hilarious. XD

This is marvelously funny. If I get time, I may play with it a little for you, but term just started, so no promises. But in any case, great work.

Continued

After playing around with it a bit, two things occured to me. You could either split it up into a series of shorter icons (per verse, say). Or you could do a less image heavy version that is more or less text based.

It really is a pity LJ can't handle it, though, as it's brilliant as is.

Re: Continued

I think what I'm going to do is disect the black/white 2-tone version that [info]soopageek did, keep whatever frames still look okay in 2-tone, then edit or replace the ones that don't work. It might mean a lot more image searching, but it would probably take me less than half the time the original did... it's a learning process.

Fantastic! That llama song gets everywhere. And I love the icon, even if it is too big.

Oooh, ooh! Can I metaquote you! PLEASE!

January 13 2006, 01:40:00 UTC 6 years ago

Hrm... we've developed an interesting conundrum... [info]metaquotes discourages the posting of icons, saying they'd prefer that such things be posted in [info]userpicks, but since it's too big to be used as an icon, it doesn't really fit that either. Probably the best thing is to post it in [info]userpicks with the comment "gankable if you can get it under 40KB"... and post a favourite line or two from the song in [info]metaquotes if you're so inclined.

Well, since you transcribed the song, I was gonna post that with a link saying it was an icon, too.

That is the most freaking amazing thing ever! I just see a bunch of little bouncing Nigel Bruces hopping around a bunch of animated Basil Rathbones. Great stuff, and great job!

Beautiful! I especially love the Emnma Watson bit (adore that girl, and to see her in *this* is just funny as hell). Anyone know the Dalek song?
